Street Lighting Improvements in Dorset
Enerveo is working on behalf of Dorset Council to upgrade certain street lighting lanterns across the county starting 16th February for 18 months.
Some older lantern models are now obsolete, meaning replacement lamps and spare parts are no longer available. To avoid the risk of streetlights failing and roads being left in darkness, these lanterns are being replaced with modern, energy-efficient alternatives.
- Only the lantern at the top of the column will be changed.
- The existing street light column will remain in place.
- No excavations or digging will be required in the road or pavement.
The new lanterns will look very similar to the existing ones and will provide the same level of lighting, meet the relevant British Standards, while using significantly less energy. They also comply with Dorset Council's updated policy on warmer white lighting and reducing upward light pollution.

Operating Times
Street lights will continue to operate in the same way as they do now:
- Lights that currently remain on all night for safety reasons will stay on.
- Lights that currently switch off at midnight will continue to do so.
After a lantern is first replaced, it may take a couple of nights for the midnight switch-off to re-calibrate. This is normal and similar to what happens after a power cut. Under the current Dorset Council policy, part-night lights:
- Dim by 50% at approximately 10:00pm.
- Switch off between midnight and 5:30am.
This dimming and switch-off schedule has been programmed into all replacement lanterns. Please note that all times are approximate and remain on GMT year-round, including during summer months. More information on part-night lighting is available here: Part-night lighting (Dorset)
